France 2007 1hr 53 min. Drama PG

In French with English Subtitles

August 4th @ 6:30 pm

Suzanne is charming but she is a mother snowed under by obligations.  With her puppet shows, the classes she teaches and the two children, Simon and Louise, that she has been raising alone since their father left, she hasn't got a minute to herself. To help her, she takes in a young Taiwanese babysitter, Song Fang, who is a student at Paris University. On his way home from school, Simon, who is 7 years old, leads her through the streets and cafés of his neighborhood. Soon, Song Fang and Simon share an imaginary world: a strange red balloon follows them, even in the exhibition space of the Musée d'Orsay.

Los Zafiros: Music from the Edge of Time

United States 2007 79 min. Not Rated

In Spanish with English Subtitles

August 18th @ 6:30 pm

As the Beatles were rocking Liverpool in the early 1960s, another great pop band was coming together in the tough musical neighborhood of Cayo Hueso in Havana.  Music, history, and emotion fuel this dynamic, award-winning tribute to Los Zafiros.  Playing a brilliant mix of American inspired Doo Wop, Afro-Cuban and traditional Latin forms, they became a sensation in Cuba and beyond before dissolving in the mid 1970s from the effects of the fast life, infighting and changing political and musical tastes.

Thirty years after their breakup, the two surviving band members, multiple-Grammy winner and Buena Vista Social Club alumnus Manuel Galbán, and the group's co-founder, Miguel Cancio, reunite in the streets of present-day Havana, a place full of unforgettable songs and memories for them and for their still-loyal fans.

Julia Pinkham

Transitions

July 11th to August 31, 2008

Oxnard resident, Julia Pinkham’s exhibition features a new series of paintings in acrylic and mixed media on canvas and panels.

For the past several years Pinkham has been an artist-in-residence at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) at California State University Channel Islands campus in Camarillo.  “The realities of being a professional artist is that it is difficult“, says Pinkham.  “It’s very competitive.  You have to draw from deep inside of you to pull out the work.”   Talking about her residency at SCIART, Pinkham relates, “I come here and it’s all about art.  I work in acrylic and mixed media.  I come to the studio and work for about 6 hours everyday.”  A lover of nature and an avid surfer, Pinkham resides at Hollywood Beach with her husband.

Artist’s Reception

Friday, July 18th 5pm to 7:30 pm

Pinkham will be present for a reception at the DCA gallery along with concurrent receptions held at the Carnegie Art Museum, the SCIART West and the Café on A, all located within walking distance in downtown Oxnard. The evening will provide a wonderful opportunity to meet many of the artists at the receptions. This event is free and the public is invited to come by and enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres.
